Skincare Advice from an Esthetician

I have over 5 years of experience on healing skin & helping others feel confident is my love language

I get messages constantly asking about skincare advice. I wanted to compile my best advice for anyone wanting to 1. start a skincare routine, 2. upgrade their skincare, 3. take better care of their skin and 4. start to heal breakouts, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, fine lines, dull and dehydrated skin.

I like to keep shit simple. I can go more in depth with some of these tips later on but let's take it slow.

Tip #1 - Exfoliate.. every. other. day.

"But Kat I don't think I own any exfoliator" This is SUPER common when I start to consult a new client, most people are cleansing and moisturizing but not exfoliating as much as they should. Exfoliating will literally change your life and start improving your skin immediately.

What even is exfoliating? A tree hut scrub? Although sugar scrubs are what most people think of, no. A physical scrub won't do what you need it to do by itself. Silica or jojoba beads are preferred ingredient wise for scrubs... stay far away from walnut scrubs. They will tear your skin worse than a make-out session with Edward Scissorhands.

So what do I recommend for exfoliating? One of my favorite exfoliants are the Glycolic Retinol pads from Skinscriptrx or the Brightening Peel pads from Sanitas. I cut mine in half so I get 100 pads for $23 (Sanitas are $74). Use them every other day after cleansing before moisturizing preferably nighttime.

If you are Acne prone i'd recommend a salicylic acid, Skinscriptrx also has Clarifying pads with salicylic, tea tree and glycolic. These AHA & BHA acids penetrate the skin and break up dead skin cells.

Tip #2 - Moisturize. Plz

Your skin is NOT a sponge. I promise. If you are cleansing your skin, lowering your PH and stripping your skin of it's natural oils.. you HAVE to moisturize. It will protect your barrier from free radicals, bacteria and straight up dirt.

Even if you don't "feel dry" your skin needs that moisture to balance it's PH back out. "I don't moisturize because I'm so oily" I love telling people about the trick to balancing out your oily skin. (pssst.. it's oil) By adding an oil it tricks your skin into not producing as much oil. Balancing you out. I love to do a serum oil (Remedy Oil by Hale and Hush) a few times a week at night to sleep in. Stay away from coconut oils.

If moisturizer feels "too heavy" I recommend the Saffron Moisturizer by Hale and Hush. If you're acne prone, the Skinscriptrx Light Aloe moisturizer is a go to ($16).

Tip #3 - Dry your face off with a Clean Towel..

My fav skincare hack, drying your face off with the Clean Skin Club disposable towels will change your life. You can also wet them for a quick makeup removal. They are $16 for 50 of them.

Tip #4 - You already know I'm going to say it.. SPF.

I'm a Licensed Esthetician so you know SPF is our religion. You cannot complain about your skin aging/sun spots when you aren't doing the bare minimum to prevent them. If you don't like the feeling/smell of SPF I highly recommend the Hale and Hush Broad Spectrum SPF. It doesn't smell and it melts into your skin like butter.

Tip #5 - Self Love Club Babes

Your skin will break out during stressful times in your life, during your period or any hormone changes. We can't stop life from lifeing (I just made that word up) so the best to do is to take the time to love yourself. Appreciate your skin for all it's carried you through. I know it's easier said than done but picking at your skin is just creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Your breakouts will spread and take even longer to heal.

Your body deserves to be celebrated. So ditch that toxic friendship, throw on a face mask and RELAX.

It's not as complicated as you think-

You do not need 7 products for a skincare routine. Focus on a good cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing routine.

3 products. (+spf) SPEND the time on your skin. Cleanse for longer than 30 seconds, focus on your problem areas.I always recommend double cleansing. Cleansing is 80% of your skincare routine. All the products I mentioned are ones I use in my treatment room and on my own skin, I swear by them. I will say I'm not a fan of Cerave or any Dove products. For my drugstore girlies I do like Vanicream and La Roche-Posay.

Also.. TikTok influencers don't actually use the products they're telling you to buy. Support your local Estis. We do this because we genuinely care about making you feel confident in your skin.

Until next time,

The Salina Esthetician

xoxo
